Meet the Blue Bloom Backpack—a one-of-a-kind handmade backpack created by the Afribit Upcycling Queens, a women-and-girls empowerment group led by Steph in Kibera, Nairobi. Each backpack is made from carefully selected upcycled fabric, giving new life to old clothes while creating something practical, beautiful, and truly unique. Because the available fabrics and handmade construction vary from piece to piece, no two backpacks will ever be exactly alike. Yours is not a mass-produced accessory—it is an original piece with its own story, and will likely become a collector's item. This backpack pairs soft periwinkle-blue floral-paisley panels with bold black-and-white geometric mudcloth patchwork, finished with black zippers, a top grab handle, and two adjustable shoulder straps. A roomy main compartment and a secure front zip pocket leave plenty of space for a laptop, books, or everyday essentials—an elegant, hard-wearing companion for work, study, or travel. Behind this bag is a bigger story. The Afribit Upcycling Queens began with volunteer training and only two sewing machines. Today the group works from a shared production space with five sewing machines, where ten women and girls sew in morning and afternoon teams—an arrangement that lets members who are still in school take part. Together they produce around ten bags a day, learning skills, earning from sales, and building savings for the future. Early orders came from the Nairobi Bitcoin Conference, and interest continues to grow through Instagram, X, and Nostr. For a Bitcoiner, this is money doing exactly what it should: circulating locally, empowering marginalized women and girls, and turning discarded fabric into lasting value—no waste, no middlemen, just sats supporting real people. Every purchase supports sustainable fashion, practical skills, and women's economic empowerment in Kibera, and can be paid over the Lightning Network. One bag. One story. One of a kind. Handmade with love, upcycled with purpose, and made in Kibera.
