From the Streets to a Streetwear Movement: The Story of 3West Collection

From the Streets to a Streetwear Movement: The Story of 3West Collection

Some brands are built on trends. 3West Collection was built on a decision — the decision to change. Born on the streets of Kibera, it is the story of a group of young people who chose to walk away from crime and negative influences and build something positive, meaningful and lasting in its place. Today, that decision has grown into one of Nairobi’s most authentic homegrown streetwear brands — and it runs on Bitcoin.

A name born from the streets

The name 3West carries a meaning far bigger than fashion. It represents a journey of transformation, unity and hope. For the young people who created it, 3West is a symbol of a fresh start — proof that where you come from does not have to determine where you are going.

“3West is more than a name. It reflects the power of change, the strength in unity, and the belief that every person deserves a second chance.”

From a small mitumba hustle to a brand

The business began about three years ago with very little — selling mitumba (second-hand) clothes. It started as a small hustle, but through consistency, determination and hard work, it slowly grew. Blanco, the founder, kept adding more products and learning the trade along the way, until he was able to open his own shop and move beyond mitumba into original 3West Collection merchandise.

Today the brand offers bold, high-quality T-shirts, jerseys, hoodies, caps and accessories — designs inspired by African culture, Jamaican vibes, urban fashion, and the spirit of freedom. It mainly serves ordinary people in the community, especially young people and those from the streets where the journey began.

“What started as a small hustle has become a source of income, purpose and motivation. It has shown me that change is possible — that you can come from difficult circumstances and slowly build something meaningful through honest work.”

More than clothes

3West Collection is not only about selling clothes — it is a journey. It represents the struggles faced, the mistakes made, the lessons learned, and the decision to keep moving forward. The vision is to grow into a recognisable lifestyle brand where every piece becomes a canvas: T-shirts, hoodies and caps that tell part of the story — the struggles of street life, the choice to change, and the creativity that transforms those experiences into art you can wear.

Looking ahead, Blanco hopes to collaborate with local artists and designers, create original collections, and reach customers beyond the streets of Kibera — even beyond the city — while giving other young people who have creativity but lack opportunity a platform of their own.

Blanco’s Bitcoin journey

In January 2025, Blanco was introduced to Bitcoin through the Afribit Foundation by Mr. Ronney, Afribit’s co-founder. At first, Bitcoin was a new and challenging concept. He had heard people talk about it, but did not fully understand what it was or how it could be used in everyday life.

His first step was joining the Bitcoin classes offered through Afribit in Kibera. The classes gave him a practical way to learn — and, just as importantly, a place to ask questions and interact with others who were also discovering Bitcoin. Slowly, concepts like wallets, sending and receiving Bitcoin, transactions, the blockchain, and self-custody started to make sense.

“I realised Bitcoin was not only something people traded for profit. It could be used as a form of payment and a way of transferring value between people — so I decided to become a Bitcoin merchant.”

Why 3West accepts Bitcoin

For Blanco, accepting Bitcoin came down to a few clear reasons:

  • Control over his money. With a Bitcoin wallet he can hold and manage his funds directly — financial independence that also comes with responsibility.
  • Fast, direct payments. He can accept payment straight from customers who already use BTC, without a long chain of intermediaries.
  • Security and self-custody. Bitcoin’s decentralised network secures transactions, and Blanco learned that protecting his own keys is part of the responsibility.
  • Learning a new financial system. Bitcoin changed the way he thinks about money, ownership and technology — and how it can create opportunities for ordinary people.

What the journey has taught him

The journey has taught Blanco that learning something new takes patience, and that Bitcoin is about far more than its price — it can be a payment network and a tool for education and financial experimentation. Becoming a merchant made it real: he has seen how a community that understands Bitcoin can make digital payments part of everyday life.

“What started as a challenging concept in January 2025 has become an important learning journey. I have gone from simply hearing about Bitcoin to actually using it in my daily business. My journey is still continuing, and I am excited to see where it takes me next.”
