Walking Kibera With Purpose: The Story of Slum City Tour Nairobi

Walking Kibera With Purpose: The Story of Slum City Tour Nairobi

Some journeys begin with a single opportunity. For Rally Walker, founder of Slum City Tour Nairobi, that opportunity was an education — and he has spent his life turning it into opportunities for others.

From a Kibera classroom to a life of purpose

Rally was raised in Kibera, the largest informal settlement in Africa. With the support of a local church, he completed his secondary education, went on to university to study English Literature, and became a professional teacher. In a place where such opportunities are rare, that education changed everything.

"It is not easy to come from the slum and reach this position. So I saw it as a way I could also help others."

He began volunteering at a local school and guiding church visitors and hotel guests around his community. What started as a way to earn a small income slowly grew into something far bigger — a mission to use tourism as a force for good.

A dumping site transformed into a place of learning

Today Rally is the Head of Education at Agape Hope for Kibera, a free school for orphans and vulnerable children. Every child is referred by social workers, and no family ever pays a fee. The ground the community now learns and works on was once a dumping site at the local Toy Market — until residents came together, reclaimed it, and turned it into a hub for education, recycling and opportunity.

"Our school is free. Children don't pay even a shilling. We don't highlight poverty — we promote quality education and the resilience of our people."

Over nearly a decade the school has grown, welcoming more teachers and now preparing to move into a permanent home of its own.

How every tour gives back

The Slum City Tour is built around a simple promise: 20% of all proceeds support Agape Hope for Kibera. That funding provides free, quality education for orphans and vulnerable children, and supplies sanitary towels so girls never have to miss school. When you book a tour, you become part of that circle of support.

This is a tour that celebrates, rather than exploits. Visitors are welcomed into the real heart of the community — local households, family enterprises, recycling initiatives, and lively edutainment featuring traditional dances performed by the schoolchildren themselves. Kibera is a place of extraordinary talent, having produced some of Kenya's biggest musicians and comedians, and it hosts one of the community's largest youth football tournaments, with thousands of children taking part.

See Kibera — and the city of Nairobi

Beyond the community walk, Rally also offers a full Nairobi city tour. Highlights include the panoramic KICC viewing deck, the colourful City Market for local crafts and ornaments, the historic Macmillan Library, and the Nairobi Railway and Macmillan museums. Pick-up points are flexible, making it easy for every visitor to join.

Powering a Bitcoin circular economy

Rally is also a committed champion of the Bitcoin circular economy in Kibera. He accepts Bitcoin across his ventures — from his clean-water business to his community washroom facilities — and has helped many young people and neighbours adopt Bitcoin for faster, cheaper everyday payments.

"Bitcoin is much cheaper and faster to work with. I can sell my things with Bitcoin, and I always know where to send my money."

By booking through Afribit Marketplace, visitors can pay for their tour seamlessly with Bitcoin — supporting a genuine, grassroots economy that keeps value circulating within the community.
