Black & White: Building a Legacy, One Meal at a Time

For Mitch and Steph, Black & White has never been just a food stand. For seven years, it’s been the foundation of a bigger vision — one that starts with a plate of fries and a cup of porridge, and stretches all the way to financial independence for their family and their community.

A Menu Rooted in Community

Walk up to their stand in Kibera and you’ll find the essentials: crispy french fries, fried cassava, and a dish locals affectionately call “power” — a hearty mix of groundnuts, cassava, and sweet potatoes. Their signature porridge, made from cassava, sweet potatoes, yams, groundnuts, and milk, has developed a loyal following; many customers believe in its natural, wholesome qualities.

“It’s always good to see growth in everything you’re doing,” Mitch reflects.

And growth is exactly what’s driving their next move.

Dreaming Bigger: The Cafeteria Expansion

As their family has grown, so has their ambition. Mitch and Steph want to become financially self-sufficient — not dependent on outside support — and their next step is transforming the food stand into a full cafeteria, complete with breakfast, lunch, and dinner service.

They’ve already secured a space just a short walk from their current stand — big enough (roughly 15 by 12 feet) to house the kind of equipment a full-service kitchen requires. For now, the space sits paused, waiting for the resources to bring it fully to life. But the need in the community is real: as Mitch puts it, there’s currently no proper sit-down eatery in the area, and neighbors have already started asking, “When are you opening?”

To help make that vision a reality, Mitch and Steph have been working through a detailed business plan — capturing everything from local market data to menu pricing — with the goal of presenting a professional, investor-ready plan to potential supporters.

Building Trust Online

Part of that professional vision includes bringing Black & White onto the Afribit Marketplace. For Mitch and Steph, having an online presence isn’t just about convenience — it’s about legitimacy.

“We want our customers to feel like they’re ordering from legit people,” Mitch explains, noting how many local businesses struggle simply because customers can’t find them online.

Giving Back Through Bitcoin

As dedicated Bitcoiners, Mitch and Steph have found creative ways to use Bitcoin to strengthen their community — not just as customers or vendors, but as organizers. Through a “recoverable grant” model, they helped distribute funding to fellow local businesses, including their own cafeteria project.

They’ve also launched a Bitcoin savings initiative nicknamed “Bitcoin groceries”, where community members save small daily amounts, pool them, and pass the support along to the next group of businesses in need — creating an ongoing cycle of mutual support and financial stability.

Mitch and Steph see their growth — from food stand to future cafeteria — as a marathon, not a sprint. Each step, from filling out a business plan to opening their online store, is part of building something lasting: a business rooted in community trust, entrepreneurial resilience, and the belief that Bitcoin can be a genuine tool for local empowerment.
